This ebook presents the results of a research study
to discover how Google chooses websites to display
when presented with a search term. The websites
of the top 10 results Google displayed for a given
search term were analyzed in depth. The procedure
was repeated for 1721 search terms (which are presented
in an Appendix).
Practically every item normally considered to affect
search engine ranking was documented. Among the
items investigated were the web document, the URL,
title and meta tags, headlines, links, images, site
popularity, and more. Among the factors looked at
were size, number, position, density and more.
Results are presented in nitty-gritty detail, first
in a table of values, and second with a graphic
chart highlighting the essential results. This is
an impressive piece of work.
It is important to recognize that these data show
associations or correlations. But not all such relationships
are meaningful. For instance, the study established
that the .com domain is more frequently found in
the top 10 results than .org, .edu, .gov, net or
co.uk. You can not draw any conclusion from this
because com is more frequently used generally on
the Net than any of the others.
Because of such uncertainties and because some results
may be easily misinterpreted, it would be nice to
see a separate section of the ebook devoted to an
in-depth analysis to go along with the in-depth
study. The author states he will do this type of
study quarterly in the future. Perhaps an analysis
will be added.
The study reviewed here covers only Google. But
I am told that similar studies are available for
Altavista, Teoma, Wisenut, Inktomi and AllTheWeb.
This ebook is good for those who have some background
in search engine positioning techniques, or at least
familiar with the lingo. It is good as a guide for
website design and as a reference.
